Common Uses for Japanese Closet Doors

February 19th, 2010 by admin

There are a variety of styles of Japanese Closet Doors. Shoji and Zen as well as Asian are only a few but they are fine examples of the beauty and craftsmanship that goes along with these doors. The materials that are used in the construction of these doors are rugged and tough making them resistant to punctures and tears. It does not, however make them water resistant. This type of door or screen should not be used as a divider in a bathroom, laundry room or anywhere they may be exposed to water or the elements.

Shoji and Zen doors are made of various woods and rice paper. Rice paper is strung tightly over a wood frame and then a form of lattice is laid over the rice paper. These can either be single sided or double sided meaning the lattice is placed on one side of the rice paper or both. There is a difference between shoji and Zen doors; shoji can have two or more panes while Zen have a large number of them. Both can have scenes imprinted on the rice paper. The most common of these imprints are cherry blossom trees and bamboo trees.

The most common uses for Japanese closet doors is a bedroom closet, a built in wardrobe or a room divider. The room divider must be much larger than the closet doors but they are all designed in the same manner with the rice paper and wood. Some of the Asian doors are made with very light weight woods such as spruce. The doors are sliding doors and require tracks for the doors to slide in. These are usually sold with the doors along with both the left and right door jambs. The prices of the kits are actually very affordable.

The sliding variety of the Japanese closet doors are not available at all retailers. In fact you would be hard pressed to find a local retailer that carries any of them in stock. You may be able to find them at Asian import businesses in the area or your local retailers may be able to special order them for you. It is recommended that you shop online to find the retailers in your area that carry them. Then you can match the screen or Japanese closet door with the rest of your home’s décor. Some of these doors are so timeless that they go with any décor.

If you are looking for a replacement door for your bedroom closet or wardrobe, you can’t go wrong with Japanese closet doors. They not only provide you with a work of art but the allow you to instill a touch of the orient into your home’s personality. They say our home should be a reflection of ourselves; find the oriental side of you with shoji or Zen doors. They have a timeless style with a bit of contemporary surprise to them.  The beauty of these doors are only marred by the sense of style they hold.
