Sweet or dry wine?

March 3rd, 2010 by admin

Many table wines that we consume from around the world are considered to be dry wine.  dry wine is basically wine that has been through the same process as ordinary wine but when they have a finished product they don’t add a substantial amount of sugar.  dry wine doesn’t contain a lot of sugar so you wont taste that sweet taste as you would with other wines.

If you are wondering how to tell weather you purchasing dry or sweet wine.  Well chances are its dry.  The majority of wines we buy are dry wines, such as your Merlot, Chardonnays, Noirs.  These wines are all dry.  The labels on these wines might not say if there dry or not but if you just buy an ordinary table wine it will be a dry wine.  If you were enjoying dinner or having a wine and cheese party than these types of wines would be perfect, because of the sugar not being added to the wine when the wine is in its finishing process it wont be as sweet and take away from the flavor of your cheese or meal that you are serving.

If your looking for a more sweeter wine than a desert wine is what your looking for.  The times desert wines are appropriate are if your enjoying the obvious, your favorite type of desert.  Or if your eating fruit, than desert wine would be perfect because it would enhance the flavor of that fruit or desert due to the added sugar in the wine.

Not all dry wine is made from grapes either.  You are able to make wine out of just about any fruit.  Apple wine is popular and it comes in a dry table wine form.  Apple wine is made from apples that have been fermented with yeast and a bit of sugar.  Same goes with strawberry wine, rasberry, blueberry, typically all your berry fruit you can find they have turned it into wine.

But remember just because it is a dry wine doesn’t mean it will be completely unsweet and fruity, there are many dry wines that contain plenty of full flavored sweetness.  So if your hosting a dinner party or a wine cheese party remember if you have any questions about what wine is best just ask a professional at the store there trained to know.
