Remove Carpet Stains With Water

The first thing to try when you need to remove carpet stains is water. It is the most basic solvent, the cheapest, and the least likely to do harm. Here are some guidelines. There are some stains that water won’t help much at all. These are primarily the ones that are oily or greasy. In those cases you can still resolve the problem cheaply by adding a few drops of a good dish detergent to your water. But in most other cases, try water first.Use a white cotton cloth or un-dyed white paper towels to sop up any liquid from spills. Then add water to the center of the spill or stain and gently sop it up again with the cloth or paper towels. Try not to rub too much or you may damage the fibers and set the stain more firmly in the carpet. Just push down and lift up. Repeat the process with fresh towels until you don’t see any more transfer of the stain to the cloth or paper. At this point you have gone as far as you can with water. If that isn’t sufficient you’ll need to try other cleaners. When you are done cleaning the stain, dry the area as quickly as you can. Initially you can do this with a stack of those un-dyed paper towels. Lay them on top and place some weight on them. Remove them after a few minutes, and if you can, place a fan nearby, aiming it to blow across the damp area. It is important to dry the stained area quickly because there may be some of the stain out of sight, deeper down in the fibers of the carpet. Fast drying prevents this from “wicking” up to the surface where it will be visible again.
