If you are a keen composter and have decided that not only are you going to put the months of effort in to breed your own batch of compost but that you are going to go the whole 9 yards and make a composting bin to breed it in then it may have struck you that this could be more effort than is actually necessary. Considering that you can buy wooden and plastic compost bins alike from a number of sources, most notably online where it is delivered to your door in a matter of days, why would you go to the trouble of fetching a load of material to go ahead and make your own composting bin out of wood? Well the truth is that it really isn’t a particularly difficult process, all that you are doing is making a large wooden box to store you growing creation in while it spends months outside in the garden. A box is hardly the most challenging of structures to build and the hardest part is slightly modifying it in order to allow for a sliding panel to enable you to access the compost when you want, which is something you will need to when adding to and stirring your compost mix, and secure it from the threat of the elements and garden creatures when you don’t! Obviously you can just can make it a secure structure but then you won’t be able to mix it and when it comes to getting to the compost at the end of the process then you will have to break it and start from scratch again if you are planning on making another batch! In simple terms as long as you have 4 legs and can hammer slats of wood across to make a cube shape then you won’t have any problems. You can follow your own ideas of how to make a wooden composting bin or search online for many of the ideas that are available. If you already have spare material such as wooden slats from old fencing panels or a shed then this will also save you money that you would spend buying the wood new from the DIY store or garden centre. Making a composting bin out of wood does not have to be a challenge and any way you look at it if you are prepared to spend 4 months making a batch of compost then surely you won’t mind spending a few hours making a box for it to live in!
