Fixed gear bikes are becoming popular during the twenty first century and are highly recommended by most cyclist. A few important reasons why fixed gear bikes are becoming popular are; sky rocketing gas prices, the “Go Green” initiative, and many Americans are getting serious about health and fitness.

What makes fixed gear bikes different from a Ten-speed bike is the number of gears.  The ten-speed bike has ten gears the fixed gear bikes have one gear. This means the fixed gear bikes will not coast; when riding this bike the cyclist feet are always pedaling. There are some advantages and disadvantages associated with the fixed gear bikes.  Some of the advantages of purchasing a fixed gear bike is the bikes are simple, low maintenance, lightweight, and the quietness of the bike.  Some of the disadvantages of purchasing fixed gear bikes are that when going down hill you have to pedal at very high speeds and riding at high speeds around corners can be difficult; it takes a bit of practice to become comfortable riding a fixed gear bike. Although with time the disadvantages of a fixed gear bike can become situation that can benefit the cyclist health and build endurance/stamina.

The “Go Green” initiative has Americans interested in ways to help conserve natural resources. One of the popular ways to do this is using a bicycle for transportation instead of cars; this also is a way to save money.

Health and fitness is on the mind of many American. Bicycling is a great way to get outside, enjoy the fresh air, burn calories, shed body fat, strengthen cardiovascular health, increase balance/flexibility, and increase endurance/stamina. When riding a bike you can burn 400 and 500 calories depending on your body type and intensity.

Some may wonder how much does a fixed gear bike cost? They range from as high as $1000 dollars to as low as $250 dollars, it all depends on how much the cyclist is willing to pay. There are also some  web sites that offer information on how to build your own fixed gear bike or instruction on how to convert your bike to a fixed gear bike.
