Giving a speech at a wedding can be one of the best man’s most stressful tasks.  It is the one time during the wedding event that all eyes are not on the bride, but on the best man himself, waiting to hear what wisdom he has to offer the newly married couple.  It is important that he takes this task seriously and puts adequate planning into his speech.  Many times the best man will try to inject humor into his speech, but this must be done carefully, because the audience will contain a wide range of humor styles.  It is best to sit down and carefully plan exactly what will be said, and stick to the plan at the wedding.

When a best man sits down to plan his speech, it is important to brainstorm all possibilities of what could be included.  Some things that might be important to talk about are the character of the bride and groom, the type of couple they are, any stories about how their relationship, and any funny memories that you remember.  Once the best man brainstorms about all the possibilities, he can review his options and think about which one’s are most appropriate for the wedding speech.  He needs to make sure that the speech contains memories and information that will be relevant to all the guests.  He also needs to make sure that there is no information or no memories that would be inappropriate for the wedding, only including details in good taste.  He wants to make sure that he spends his time pointing out the strenghts and positive aspects of the bride and groom and of their relationship, this isn’t a time to vent.  Lastly, the speech can include some advice or inspiration for the couple moving forward.
